July Writing: The Round-up

Hope everyone is doing well. Over the last few months, I have written words. So many words! So very many words, which I have turned into paychecks that in turn are used to afford life essentials, such as rent, diapers for my daughter and beer. Beer! That's why you're here. Howdy, friends. Summer has been a tilt-a-whirl of travel, from staying at a girls' camp outside Portland, Maine, to riding on Sierra Nevada's Beer Camp bus in California, camping in Cooperstown, spending a week on Fire Island and, well, sleeping in a shack in Richmond, Virginia. Through all the travel, I've been writing like crazy. Seriously, I can't remember a summer when I've penned so many stories.

That might explain why I really, really need a break. This Labor Day weekend, I'm looking forward to spending the majority of my time pants-less, drinking beer—which isn't really so different from my day-to-day life, you know. Pants stifle creativity! Or maybe I'm just lazy. Which could also be the case.

Anyhoo! Without further ado, here are the highlights from my last few months of stories. Read away!

October Beer-Story Roundup

Writing+drunk+high_ Fine drinkers! The last month has been a tilt-a-whirl of travel for The Complete Beer Course. Over the course of 12 hours, I consumed beer in both Brooklyn and San Diego—and at 30,000 feet too—to kickstart a book tour that has not quite ended yet.  In between drinking more than my recommended daily allowance of beer, as well as preparing for the impending birth of my daughter next month, I've been writing. Oh, have I been writing! So many words! So many, many words!

This dichotomy suits me like Savile Row's finest. I'm able to get out in the world and chitchat with folks, then retreat to my hermit cave and crank out stories like one of those monkeys tethered to a typewriter. Anyway, I digress. Which is sort of the point of writing on your own website, right? No editors to request that you turn your stories into a clickable slideshow or knock out a trend-driven story on, say, pumpkin beers or football season. It's tough being a writer in this attention-deficit Internet age. But you know what? There are far, far worse jobs out there in the world. Actually, that's a lie: newspaper reporter is the worst job.

So why do I do it? I like writing. And I like drinking beer. And I like investigating their delicious intersections. Without further hullabaloo, here are some of the stories I've penned over the last month. You'll want to crack a beer first.

America's Strange—and Strangely Delicious—Brews

Every blue moon, I pull on a pair of pants and work in an office in Midtown Manhattan as a copy editor. When I was a young, struggling writer, an aptitude with punctuation and proper spelling helped keep me fiscally afloat as I sent my stories into the ether, praying that someone would pay me pennies for my words. Thankfully, those days are (mostly) behind me, though I will occasionally work an in-office job. It's not so much for the money as it is for camaraderie, of talking to someone besides my pooch, Sammy.

When I'm working in Midtown, I like to treat myself to a fiery, numbing Sichuan lunch from Szechuan Gourmet. It's one of New York's more dependable spots to grab some ma po tofu, that mix of silken tofu and crumbled pork in a blood-red bath of incendiary oil. It is singularly awesome. very few people in my office agree.  "It sounds like a dare," a coworker said, moving her chair back a few inches. "It's not a dare," I said. "It's daringly delicious."

I did not convince her to go in on the order with me, but hopefully I can convince you try a few of these daring beers. Today, brewers are digging ever deeper into their spice cabinets to dredge up ingredients that sound like a punishment worthy of a Fear Factor contestant: spirulina, bhut jolokia peppers, even bull testicles.

Yup, it'll take some balls to drink these beers, but the payoff is in the flavor. Behold, my first tale for Bon Appétit, "Strange Brew." Drink it up!
